5. The yard has soggy spots, unusual growth, or settling
A leaking buried sewer line can release moisture into the surrounding soil. Watch for a persistently damp patch, an area of unusually green growth, sewage odor outdoors, soft ground, or localized settling along the pipe route. Those symptoms can have other causes too, so have the line located and inspected before anyone considers excavation.
Tree roots may enter an existing crack or loose joint and gradually restrict flow. Older pipe materials can also corrode, deform, or separate over time. The inspection results determine whether cleaning, a targeted repair, or a larger sewer repair is the right next step.
