Drain Cleaning in Los Angeles, CA
Slow drains, gurgles, and odors signal buildup that won’t resolve on its own. We use the right method — cable, auger, or jetting — based on what your line actually needs.
When to call for drain cleaning
Common signs we see on residential and commercial properties:
What actually causes a drain to slow down
Most slow drains are not a single obstruction. They are a narrowing that has been building for months. Kitchen lines collect fats, oils and grease that leave the sink warm and liquid, then cool inside the pipe and harden onto the walls alongside soap scum and food debris. Bathroom lines narrow differently — hair binds with soap residue into a mat that catches everything passing it. Laundry lines accumulate lint and detergent film.
Older lines add a second mechanism. Cast iron corrodes from the inside, and the rough, scaled surface that results grabs debris that would slide straight through smooth pipe. Clay and older jointed laterals release small amounts of moisture at every joint, and roots follow that moisture; once inside, they keep growing.
A fourth cause is not a blockage at all. A bellied line — a section that has settled below grade — holds standing water permanently, so waste settles in the low spot instead of flowing through it. Cabling a bellied line clears it briefly and it fills again, because the slope of the pipe, not the debris, is the problem.
Which of these you have is what determines whether cleaning solves the problem or only postpones it.
How we choose between cabling, augering and hydro jetting
The method is a diagnostic decision, not a preference.
A cable or auger works mechanically: it drives a rotating head through the blockage and opens a channel. That is the right tool for a discrete obstruction — a hair mat, a lodged object, a single clogged branch — and for lines whose condition is unknown or fragile. Its limitation is that punching through hardened buildup leaves the buildup on the walls, so the line narrows again from the same starting point.
Hydro jetting works differently. High-pressure water scours the full inside diameter, cutting grease and scale off the pipe wall rather than boring through it. On a grease-loaded commercial kitchen line, or a lateral carrying heavy scale, that is the difference between a fix that holds and one that does not. It also asks more of the pipe, so it is not the automatic answer on a line of unknown or compromised condition.
Camera inspection comes first when the symptoms point past a single fixture — several drains backing up together, or a clog that returns on a predictable schedule. Looking before clearing is what separates a line that needs cleaning from a line that needs repair.
Residential and commercial lines fail differently
In a home, the usual failure is gradual and local: one fixture slows, hair and soap in a bathroom branch or grease in the kitchen line, while the rest of the system keeps working normally.
Commercial properties fail on volume and on schedule. A restaurant kitchen puts more grease through a line in a week than a household does in a year, and the failure tends to arrive at the worst possible moment. Multi-unit buildings concentrate several tenants onto shared stacks, so one blockage affects people who did not cause it and cannot fix it. Grease interceptors, floor drains and prep sinks each carry their own maintenance interval.
We work on both, and the questions we ask on arrival are different for each.
When the same drain keeps coming back
A clog that returns is information. Cleared properly, a branch line should stay clear for a long time. If the same drain slows again within weeks or months, the restriction is usually not where it is being treated.
Backups across more than one fixture generally point to the main line rather than a branch. The useful next step there is a sewer camera inspection, which shows whether the cause is root intrusion, a cracked or offset joint, or a bellied section. What the camera finds determines whether the answer is hydro jetting, sewer repair, or in some cases trenchless sewer repair.
Repeatedly cabling a line that has failed structurally is money spent on the symptom.
Drain lines in Los Angeles homes
Much of the housing stock across Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley predates modern drainage materials. Homes built through the middle of the last century commonly ran cast iron inside and clay laterals out to the street, and both age in ways that matter here: cast iron scales and narrows from within, clay joints separate.
The mature street trees that give these neighborhoods their character supply the other half of the problem. Established root systems seek the moisture escaping from a joint, and a lateral running beneath a parkway sits directly in their path. On hillside lots, slope adds a further variable — long runs and grade changes both affect how well a line clears.
Drain Cleaning FAQ
Will a store-bought drain product fix a slow drain?
Sometimes, briefly, on a minor clog. Chemical openers act on the part of the blockage they reach and leave the rest behind, and repeated use of caustic products is hard on older pipe and on its joints. If a drain has needed treatment more than once, the useful step is finding out why rather than treating it again.
How do I know whether it is one drain or the main line?
The clearest signal is more than one fixture responding at the same time — a toilet flush that makes a tub gurgle, or a shower that backs up when the washing machine drains. When fixtures share symptoms, they share a blockage, and it sits downstream of both.
Is hydro jetting safe for older pipes?
That depends on the condition of the pipe, which is why we look before deciding. On sound pipe, jetting is thorough and appropriate. On a line already compromised by corrosion or cracking, the right sequence is to inspect first and choose the method afterward.
Do you handle commercial kitchen drains?
Yes. Grease-loaded kitchen lines, floor drains and shared stacks in multi-unit buildings are routine work, and they generally call for jetting on a maintenance interval rather than one-time clearing.
