Lining and bursting are different jobs
Trenchless covers two methods that solve different problems, and they are not interchangeable.
Pipe lining — cured-in-place lining — draws a resin-saturated liner through the existing pipe and cures it in position, forming a new pipe inside the old one. It needs a host pipe continuous enough to carry the liner, and it slightly reduces the internal diameter. It suits lines that are cracked, leaking at joints or root-infiltrated but still structurally present.
Pipe bursting pulls a bursting head through the old line, fracturing it outward while drawing new pipe in behind. It replaces the pipe rather than lining it, which means it can handle a line too far gone to line, and it can maintain or increase diameter. It needs access pits at both ends and enough room around the line for the old pipe to displace into.
What has to be true before trenchless is on the table
Three conditions decide it, and all three come from the inspection rather than from preference.
The line has to be continuous enough to work with. A fully collapsed section leaves nothing to line or burst through. Alignment has to be usable — a belly is a grade problem, and lining a bellied section preserves the bad grade, so it stays a bellied line. And there has to be access at both ends for pits.
Where those do not hold, conventional excavation is the honest answer, not a fallback. Camera inspection is what establishes which situation you are in.
Where trenchless actually saves money
The saving is rarely in the pipe work itself. It is in what does not have to be destroyed and rebuilt.
A line running under a driveway, a mature garden, a patio or a finished slab carries a restoration cost that can exceed the plumbing. Trenchless leaves that surface intact, and on those sites it is usually the cheaper total job even when the pipe work costs more.
On a shallow line crossing open ground with nothing above it, the calculation reverses — open excavation can be simpler and cheaper. Which is why the method follows the site.
What the line is like afterwards
A lined pipe is a continuous pipe with no joints through the lined section, which removes the joints that roots were entering through in the first place. The internal surface is smooth, so it carries debris better than the corroded or root-scarred surface it replaced.
A burst-and-replaced line is new pipe in the original path. Both outcomes end the root-entry problem at the joints they cover — but neither corrects a slope defect, because neither changes where the pipe sits.

No, and that is worth knowing early. A fully collapsed section leaves nothing to line or burst through, and a bellied line has a grade problem that trenchless does not correct. Both still need excavation.
What is the difference between lining and bursting?
Lining forms a new pipe inside the existing one, so it needs the host pipe to be reasonably intact and it slightly reduces diameter. Bursting fractures the old pipe outward and pulls new pipe through in its place, so it handles worse condition and can hold or increase diameter, but it needs access pits and room to displace the old pipe.
Will roots come back?
Not through the joints that were rehabilitated — a lined section has no joints for roots to enter. Roots can still enter through any part of the run that was not covered, which is why the extent of the work is set from the camera footage.
