When to call for gas line repair

Common signs we see on residential and commercial properties:

Smell of gas near appliances or piping
Hissing near a gas line
Failed pressure test
Corroded outdoor lines
Appliance disconnect leaks

If you suspect a gas leak right now

Do not use this page to decide. Leave the building, avoid switching anything electrical on or off on your way out, do not use a phone inside, and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside.

Gas line repair is scheduled after the immediate hazard has been handled by the people whose job that is. A plumber is the right call for repairing, replacing and testing gas piping — not for making an active leak safe.

Once the situation is safe, call (323) 303-0060 and we will take it from there.

What actually fails in gas piping

Threaded joints are the usual location. Black iron pipe is joined with threaded fittings sealed with compound, and that seal degrades over decades of thermal cycling and vibration, particularly at appliance connections that have been disturbed.

Corrosion is the other principal cause, and it is mostly an outdoor and underground problem: buried or exterior piping exposed to soil moisture, irrigation and weather corrodes from the outside in. Piping that runs through a wall or slab without proper sleeving is a common location for the same reason.

Then there is mechanical damage — a line struck during landscaping, a flexible appliance connector kinked or over-stressed when an appliance was moved, or piping that has been added to over the years without the supply being resized for the extra load.

Pressure testing is how a repair is proven

A gas repair is not finished when the joint is remade. It is finished when the system holds a test.

The line is isolated and pressurised, and the pressure is observed over a set period. A line that holds is sound; a line that loses pressure still has a leak somewhere, whether or not the one you found has been fixed. That is precisely why testing matters — the symptom you noticed and the fault that caused it are not always the same joint.

Where work is permitted and inspected, the test is also what the inspection is looking at. Skipping it is not a shortcut; it means nobody knows whether the repair worked.

Adding or moving a gas appliance

Adding load is where existing piping most often turns out to be inadequate. A supply sized for the appliances installed decades ago may not deliver enough for what is being added, and the symptom is not a leak — it is appliances that underperform when several run at once.

So the evaluation covers sizing and the condition of the run, not just the connection point. Gas line installation for a new appliance and tankless water heater conversions in particular tend to raise demand meaningfully, and a tankless unit’s requirement often exceeds what the existing line was built to carry.

Gas piping on older Los Angeles properties

Much of the older housing stock here was piped in black iron and has been modified repeatedly — appliances added, kitchens reworked, outdoor equipment run off a spur. Each modification is a joint, and joints are where leaks appear.

Outdoor and underground runs to pool heaters, fire features and detached garages are a recurring source of corrosion problems, since irrigation keeps the surrounding soil damp. Seismic considerations also apply to gas systems, and shut-off valve provisions are worth confirming on any older installation while work is being done anyway.

Gas Line FAQ

Leave the building, do not operate electrical switches on the way out, do not use a phone indoors, and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside. Plumbing work is scheduled after the immediate hazard has been dealt with — not instead of dealing with it.

Because a test checks the whole isolated system, not the joint that was worked on. A line that still loses pressure has another fault, and finding it is the point of testing rather than a sign the repair went wrong.

Sometimes a section can be replaced. But corrosion is driven by the conditions around the pipe, so where the surrounding run shares that exposure, replacing more of it is often the more durable answer than repairing one spot repeatedly.

Frequently, yes. Tankless units draw substantially more at peak than a storage heater, and existing supply piping is often sized for what was there before. That is assessed as part of the work rather than assumed either way.
