When to call for gas line installation

Common signs we see on residential and commercial properties:

Sizing is the part that gets skipped

A gas line has to deliver enough volume at adequate pressure to every appliance running at once. That is a calculation, not a guess, and it depends on the total demand in BTU, the length of the run, the number of fittings, and the pipe diameter.

Add an appliance to a system sized for what was there twenty years ago and the symptom is rarely dramatic. It is appliances underperforming when several run together — a furnace that struggles while the range is on, a water heater that recovers slowly in winter.

This is why tankless water heater conversions so often turn into gas line work. A tankless unit’s peak demand commonly exceeds what the existing line was ever built to carry, and no amount of correct installation at the unit compensates for a supply that cannot feed it.

Material and routing

Black iron pipe with threaded fittings is the traditional interior standard — durable, rigid, and requiring careful thread sealing at every joint. Corrugated stainless tubing runs more flexibly with fewer joints, which suits some routes well but has its own installation requirements, including proper bonding.

Outdoor and underground runs are a different problem, because the enemy is corrosion from soil moisture and irrigation. That drives material choice and protection, and it is the reason exterior runs to pool heaters, fire features and detached structures fail more often than interior piping of the same age.

Routing follows the same logic: pipe through a wall or slab needs sleeving, and every joint is a future leak location, so fewer and better-placed joints beats a shorter run with more of them.

Shut-offs, testing and inspection

Each appliance gets its own shut-off valve, accessible without moving the appliance. That sounds like a detail until something needs isolating in a hurry.

The installation is proven by pressure test: the line is isolated, pressurised and observed. A line that holds is sound; a line that loses pressure has a leak, wherever it is. That test is what makes the work verifiable rather than assumed.

Gas work is typically permitted and inspected, and the inspection is largely looking at the same things — sizing, materials, support, shut-offs, and the test result. Work that is not inspected is not cheaper; it is just unverified, and it surfaces at the point of sale.

Outdoor kitchens, fire features and pool heaters

Exterior gas work adds three problems interior work does not have: distance, exposure, and load.

Distance means pressure drop over the run, which feeds directly back into sizing — a long run to the far corner of a property needs larger pipe than the same appliance close to the meter. Exposure means corrosion protection, because irrigation keeps soil damp year-round.

Load is the one people underestimate. A pool heater or a commercial-style outdoor burner can carry a demand comparable to everything else in the house combined, so it is rarely a matter of extending the nearest line.

Older Los Angeles gas systems

Much of the housing stock here was piped in black iron for a smaller set of appliances and has been extended repeatedly since — a kitchen remodel, a dryer added, an outdoor feature run off the nearest convenient point. Each extension is a set of joints, and cumulative extensions are how a system quietly outgrows its supply.

Seismic considerations apply to gas systems too, and shut-off provisions are worth confirming on any older installation while work is being done anyway. Where existing piping is corroded or a previous modification is questionable, that is a gas line repair conversation rather than an installation one.
